That’s the story of how our modular cabinet system came to be.
A brief history of storage design.
Cabinets, closets, and home storage haven’t always looked the way they do today.
In earlier homes, storage was often freestanding—think armoires, wardrobes, and hutches from classical homes—rather than fully integrated into the architecture. As built-ins became more common in the early 20th century, they were designed with a high level of craftsmanship and intention.
But as housing demand boomed in the post-war era, efficiency and scale became the priority. Standardized cabinet systems and reach-in closets with sliding or bi-fold doors became the norm because they were practical, repeatable, and cost-effective.
Since then, while styles have evolved, the underlying approach to cabinetry hasn’t fundamentally changed. And, well, we thought it was time to take a new approach.
So we asked ourselves:
How could we change and simplify how cabinets are built into a home? How could we make them look and function as a more intentional, cohesive design choice?
That’s how we arrived at the Hygge Supply modular cabinet system.
Planned, not placed.
The first thing you’ll notice about Hygge Supply cabinets is that they feel like they were intentionally built into each home. And that’s because…we designed it that way.
Most floor plans are designed first, and storage is added later.
We reversed that process. Storage isn’t an afterthought. It’s part of the architecture.
Our cabinets are built into recesses in the walls in the kitchen, hallways, and bedrooms, so that they give a minimal look and feel to each space. And in bathrooms, cabinets and countertops fit perfectly into predetermined spaces that allow for greater efficiencies in the build process.
European-style luxury and functionality.
Cabinets and closets in the US follow a pretty standard look. Picture the classic bi-fold cabinet doors or accordion closet doors on tracks. While those styles may be common in this part of the world, we drew inspiration from modern European cabinetry defined by flat-panel fronts, minimal hardware, and precise, flush integration into the architecture of the home.
Hygge Supply cabinets feature one simple, flat front with a durable powder-coat finish. The powder coat is made without solvents, therefore emitting zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when applied to our cabinet fronts and frames.
Each flat front opens or pulls to reveal layers of storage nested inside. And customization doesn’t end once your cabinets and closets are installed. Our modular system allows you to easily adjust shelf heights, add hanging bars, and change drawer sizes and depths to fit your evolving needs.
Simplicity in design and installation.
As part of our goal to make elegant design simple and accessible, we offer a limited number of colors and SKUs of cabinet fronts. We’ve done the hard work up front to design color schemes and combinations that integrate seamlessly. That means less guesswork and simplicity for you.
The color you select for your cabinet faces is used throughout the home in the kitchen, hallways, bedrooms, and bathrooms.
Simplicity in selections and design choices creates greater efficiencies and cost savings in the shipping, installation, and build process.
Integrated appliances.
We integrate Fisher & Paykel’s premium appliances into our modular cabinet system, creating a seamless and functional kitchen experience.
Our kitchen kit includes a full Fisher & Paykel appliance suite, featuring panel-ready Column Refrigerators and Freezers that fit flush within the cabinetry, a 30” Wall Oven, and a 24” DishDrawer dishwasher integrated into the kitchen island.
These appliances are thoughtfully selected to complement Hygge Supply’s minimalist aesthetic, offering both high performance and a cohesive design. The integration ensures that the appliances not only meet the functional needs of the home but also enhance the overall visual harmony of the living space.
